A healthy alligator, measuring approximately 10 feet from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail (and no, I did not use a measuring tape), basks in the warm sun along the banks of “Rip’s Rookery” in Jefferson Island, Louisiana. Alligators are typically quite calm and rarely attack humans unless provoked. We walked within eight feet of this one, and it didn’t even blink.
