Description
The seahorse is a remarkable bony fish, distinguished as one of only two species that swim vertically. It also possesses a unique and flexible neck, setting it apart from other fish. They have a horn on their head (called a “coronet”, and a prehensile tail which helps them stay still in rougher waters. They have existed for over 3 million years, ranging from Nova Scotia (Canada) to Uruguay (South America). While the female seahorse expels the eggs, it’s the male who is ‘pregnant’, carrying them in a ‘brood pouch’ until they hatch. Although the seahorse is classified as a fish, it is not a strong swimmer. In fact, the Pygmy Seahorse found in the Caribbean moves at a sluggish pace of just 5 feet per hour!
